Managing international assignments in China during the downturn

In May 2009, our International Assignment Services Group conducted a spot survey to ascertain the extent to which the key trends identified in the 2008 survey "Key Trends of Cross-Border Moves in Asia" may have changed in the first half of 2009.
 
The focus on managing international assignments in China during the first half of 2009 has undoubtedly been on cost management as reflected in the way full localisation and local-plus packages have been more aggressively implemented.  The Human Resources ("HR") function in China-based companies has a pivotal role to play when the global economy turns around.  Until then, the HR function should focus on cost reduction alternatives to retain their current pool of existing human capital so they are well-prepared when the upswing occurs.
